A bus, trolley, or carriage tour are three of the best ways to see the city of Philadelphia, because so much of it must be experienced first-hand to be fully enjoyed.  The following organizations provide very reputable service and can be trusted to deliver the best possible quality.

BUS AND TROLLEY TOURS

American Trolley Tours
Choo-Choo Trolley Company
(215)333-0320

On this tour of Philadelphia's historic district, guides take visitors around on trolley busses and offer complete narration of the city's history and main attractions.  The tour combines walking with trolley riding; it leaves at regular intervals from all of the major hotels, as well as both Visitor Centers.  It is recommended that you call in advance to finalize your reservation and make sure that all tours are running.

Penn's Landing Trolley
P.O. Box 7285
(215)627-0807

This unique tour group offers a round-trip ride along the historic waterfront of the city, but it's all done through antique-looking streetcars from the old days of Philadelphia.  If you're looking to get on one of these crazy contraptions, hang around the Delaware Avenue area where it intersects Dock or Spruce Streets.  The tours are available during the spring and summer months and do require both an admission fee and reservations.

Philadelphia Trolley Works
1119 North Bodine Street
(215)923-8522

The Trolley Works features trolley tours of the more scenic areas of the city as well as the historic district, which contains a wealth of sightseeing opportunities.  The tour lasts about an hour and fifteen minutes and is completely narrated by a guide who really knows his/her stuff.  If you're looking to get on board, it departs from the Liberty Bell, which is at Market and Fifth Streets.  Call ahead of time for reservations and any other information you may need.

CARRIAGE TOURS

76 Carriage Company
1119 North Bodine Street
(215)923-8516

76 Carriage offers horse-drawn carriage tours of Philly's historic areas, which are located about three or four blocks from the Delaware River.  Tours are completely narrated and start from Independence National Historical Park on 5th and Chestnut Streets.  There are also tours of Head House Square and Society Hill if you choose to utilize them as well.  Call ahead for information and possible reservations.
