Independence
Hall, in the Historic District of Philadelphia, is one of the most
important buildings in our country’s history. Known as the
birthplace of the United States, the Hall has housed such
momentous events as the signing of the Declaration of Independence
and the adoption of the Constitution. It was constructed in 1732
as the Pennsylvania State House, and used to contain the seal of
England hanging over the large desk in one of the front rooms;
later, that seal was taken to City Hall and burned following the
decision to go to war for independence
